Independent Māori Statutory Board Appointments

Six of the nine members for the next three-year term of the Independent Māori Statutory Board (IMSB) for Auckland have been appointed by the statutory Selection Body:

Mana Whenua representatives

David Taipari
Pongarauhine Renata
James Brown
Edward Ashby

 

Matāwaka representatives

 

Tau Henare
Tony Kake

 

 

Their appointments begin on 1 November 2022 and continue to 31 October 2025.

The remaining three Mana Whenua appointments are expected to be confirmed in November 2022.

The IMSB acts to ensure Auckland Council takes into account the view of Māori in Tāmaki Makaurau when making decisions.  The board works to improve Māori wellbeing and development for the benefit of all New Zealanders, particularly everyone who lives in, or visits, Tāmaki Makaurau.

The Local Government (Auckland Council) Act 2009 provides for the appointment of a board to promote issues of significance for Mana Whenua and Matāwaka of Tāmaki Makaurau.

The inaugural meeting of the 2022 Selection Body was held on 16 September 2022

The Local Government (Auckland Council) Act 2009 established the Selection Body and Independent Māori Statutory Board.
A link to the Act can be found here. Relevant sections include Part 1, cl 4 Interpretation, Part 7 cls 81-89, and Schedule 2.

The Selection Body is established from the first meeting of the persons chosen as Mana Whenua representatives (cl 2 and cl 4 of Schedule 2 of the Act). Its sole function is to appoint members to the Independent Māori Statutory Board. Once this function is performed, it ceases to exist.

Clause 2(4) provides that in appointing members to the Board, the Selection Body must be guided only by the Board’s purpose, functions, and powers. It is not subject to directives from Auckland Council.

The IMSB is made up of seven Mana Whenua representatives and two Matāwaka representatives. You can find more information about the IMSB here.
